Words of Wisdom

From: An Architect's Interpretation, by Sam Spata, in This is Lean, (Nicholas Modig & Par Ahlstrom, 2015), pp. 35-36 (available from LCI). Consider how a Lean Operations Strategy can improve an architectural and engineering practice…Deliver Lean Design: "…a creative process to prevent error and invent value." This is Lean suggests that resolving sources of variation in the design process – inherently recursive and iterative – can deliver both required function (meeting the client's need) and aspirational form (meeting the architect's need) within the constraints of time and money.

Community of Practice (CoP) Corner

Thank you to all of the CoPs who participated in the CoP call earlier this month where we spoke about the goals and strategies for the CoPs in the future. If you or your delegate were not able to make the call, please contact Ilene Goldberg.

CoP best practices
ALL CoPs want to know what is working for other CoPs. From here on out, we will have a "CoP best practices" section in the LCI Update.

In this newsletter we are going to feature the Las Vegas CoP and their Lean Coffees. The Las Vegas CoP has a Lean Coffee every month no matter what. Jim Cavaness is the Chair of the CoP and he mentioned that when they started their Lean Coffees, they could have as many as five people show up, or it could be just him and another member of his core group. However, they kept on having a monthly event and keep up their visibility within the Las Vegas community – they have never cancelled an event!

Now, the Las Vegas CoP has a much more robust program and attendance with 20 people who show up faithfully at the Lean Coffees and sometimes more! Jim states that they even have a very prominent GC who has become much more involved in the Las Vegas CoP and Lean community from their participation in CoP events. He states that the growth of the CoP comes from never cancelling an event and faithfully having monthly Lean coffees and keeping up the visibility.

Jim says, "Keep on having events. It doesn't matter how many people show up. It is better to educate a few than no one at all. That keeps the word of mouth spreading and the attendance growing!"

Thank you Jim and the Las Vegas CoP!

If your CoP has a story or best practice that you would like to see featured in the LCI Update, please contact Ilene Goldberg,
