LCI Congress recap and look-ahead

After another record-breaking year with more than 1,500 in attendance and an extensive program including 30 training courses, three keynotes, more than 260 speakers and four Gemba Walks, LCI and the 2017 LCI Congress planning team are pleased our attendees found such value in the annual event's content:

  • "The energy and excitement by the folks that shared their success stories was infectious."
  • "High quality content. Learning at least one thing from each of the presentations."
  • "Learning, connecting and reconnecting."
  • "I loved how the presentations were more diverse. Best Congress in my 5 years by far!"

Next year’s LCI Congress will be our 20th annual event, and the Lean community will take over Orlando, Fla., from Oct. 15-19. Sign up to be notified when the 2018 LCI Congress call for abstracts opens!

The 2018 LCI Congress Orlando planning team is eager to take action on the feedback entered by attendees along with the tips shared by the 2017 planning team during the annual LCI Congress Lessons Learned meeting.

LCI is hugely grateful for the support around LCI Congress and each year, we rely on the local planning team volunteers and the LCI Community of Practice (CoP) closest to the host city to rally companies regionally to get involved through attending, sponsoring, exhibiting, or presenting on a current Lean challenge.

Special thanks to the 2017 LCI Congress core planning team for all their efforts in putting together this year’s in-depth program!

Thank you to the LCI Congress sponsors and exhibitors who play a huge part in delivering value to our attendees. You can watch each 2017 LCI Congress exhibitor webinar here.

LCI corporate members, apply to
be an Improved Instructor –
LCI Education Committee

To meet our members’ needs for more accessible and frequent training in Lean design and construction implementation, the LCI Education Committee developed LCI Learning Modules that can be presented at Community of Practice (CoP) events or internally at LCI corporate member companies.

LCI is seeking effective, engaging and knowledgeable LCI corporate member Lean practitioners to apply to become LCI Improved Instructors who can fill in the training gaps in between our national events by teaching the LCI Learning Modules. Fill out the LCI Improved Instructor Application found in the link below as a first step!

CoP Leaders collaborate to
build strong foundations

LCI CoPs need the participation of LCI corporate member companies to build a strong foundation! Are there Lean leaders in your company who can commit to joining a local CoP Core Group? Find the CoP closest to you and get involved!

CoP Leaders connected during their bi-annual face-to-face National Practice Team meeting during the 2017 LCI Congress in Anaheim, Calif., which included select CoPs (listed below) highlighting specific successes experienced by their CoP this year.

  • Tim VanAntwerp, Michigan CoP, Building a Strong Core Group
  • Greg Lusignan, New Orleans CoP, Grassroots Event Marketing
  • Jake Snyder, Austin CoP, CoP Leaders Connect and Collaborate (I-35 Corridor)

In the coming month, CoP Core Groups will be working to build their 2018 Strategic Plans, which will focus on growing Capacity, Demand, Knowledge and Value around their local geography.

Does your CoP have an innovative idea to share? Send it to Denise Erminger, derminger@leanconstruction.org!

LCI Board engages Lean Leaders
for a fresh perspective

At every LCI Congress, the LCI board of directors meets on LCI’s current and future plans, programs and objectives, but this year, LCI Board Chair Mark Konchar changed it up. For the first time, each board member invited a “Lean Leader”: a young professional within the same organization who is advancing Lean. The Lean Leaders were asked to observe the board meeting and offer a fresh perspective on how LCI can achieve its vision to "transform the built environment through Lean implementation."

After observing day 1 of the board meeting, the Lean Leaders adjourned to a separate room, discussed their observations, and developed a report that touched on and provided detailed recommendations on the following overarching themes:

  • Promoting Lean demand is appropriate but not sufficient. LCI must also address workforce capacity issues and stimulate the teaching of Lean concepts in university and trade program curriculums.
  • LCI student groups in universities could engage students, along with discounted membership and event scholarships.
  • The LCI Congress program could be reconfigured to promote clarity and enhance value in several areas.
  • Encourage companies to “realign mindsets” to foster Lean approaches and eliminate bad behaviors as they train new recruits and identify and groom Lean Leaders early in their careers.

The LCI board saw the Lean Leader session as a real asset in helping expand its thinking on topics and means to better engage the Lean Leaders of the future. We will continue to seek to engage this group and other young professionals in discussions around LCI's future goals, objectives and strategies.
