Words of Wisdom

"Target Value Delivery finally provides teams a repeatable approach to explore the value paradox – to understand useful value vs. exchange value – thereby enabling them to define value beyond just cost and empower teams to maximize the return (useful value) on their investment (exchange value). Bevan Mace, VP, National Operations & Lean, Balfour Beatty Construction, Target Value Delivery, Practitioner Guidebook to Implementation

Thanks to many of you for attending the 18th Annual Congress in Chicago!

We were pleased with attendance of almost 1350, and an extensive program that included three keynotes, almost 250 presenters, 24 training courses and five Gemba tours.

Thank you to all of our sponsors and exhibitors as well. The Congress would not have been complete without your contribution!

When asked what was valuable at this conference, some of our attendees stated:

  • "Great variety of Lean journeys both big picture overview and some 'digging down' into more specific tool or method applications. Excellent!"
  • Congress this year really validated a lot of the efforts that I have been focusing on over the past year, specifically the behavioral and cultural shift.
  • Best organized and arranged LCI Congress I have ever attended (been to many)

Special Thanks to the 2016 Congress Planning Core Team for all their efforts in putting together this year's in-depth program:

Tim Vander Molen, Integrated Facilities Solutions, Inc. (LCI Congress Conference Chairman)
Afshan Barshan, Skender Construction (Congress Champion Lead)
Brittanie Campbell-Turner, Mace Group
Tim Cooper, Pepper Construction Company
Nancy Dolan, Advocate Health Care
Denise Erminger, BP Whiting Projects Team
Todd Jabaay, Integrated Facilities Solutions, Inc.
Will Lichtig, The Boldt Company
Cindy Menches, IMPACT
Dave Olson, W.B. Olson, Inc.
Rich Seiler, Unified Works

Revamped LCI website

Many of you will be aware that LCI launched a new website a few months back with a fresh look and some additional resources. Our new site is designed to get you the helpful information you're looking for with fewer clicks. Our home page emphasizes what LCI is all about for our non-members, and our members can easily find where to login to get members-only information. Toward the bottom of the homepage, you can find three sections featuring our live Twitter feed, upcoming events and what's new with LCI. We hope you enjoy our refreshed layout and can find everything you need with ease. Please contact Joan Piccariello at joanp@leanconstruction.org with questions or comments about our website's new layout.

New Last Planner® Resource

Our friends at P2SL Berkeley have made available a new resource to the Lean community: the Current Process Benchmark for the Last Planner System, now available on the Project Production Systems Laboratory's website.

LCI Survey Seeks your Help in improving our Outreach to Industry

Those who attended the recent Congress meeting will recall that we announced a new survey to be released later this month intended to help us better communicate with industry. LCI has contracted with the McKinley Advisors organization to survey our constituency and help us develop a strategy and plan to enhance our outreach to industry as we seek to transform the built environment. When you see this survey in the weeks ahead please invest the time to complete it so we can improve our efforts in this key area.

Resources available through LCI

We now have three resources available in book form in support of your Lean journey: Transforming Design and Construction, released in 2015, remains available. Target Value Delivery: Practitioner Guidebook to Implementation, was a Congress handout, and this is now available for order through LCI. This book offers practitioner guidance on getting started with a TVD approach. Finally, Target Value Design, Introduction, Framework and Current Benchmark, remains available as a valuable resource to understand TVD and its use in the current environment.

LCI Board Creates New Graphic to Highlight our Mission, Goals and Objectives

Among the outcomes of our recent board meeting in Chicago was the approval of a new graphic presentation of LCI's goals and objectives intended to be clearer and easier to understand and communicate. The new graphic may be accessed here. Your feedback is welcomed: danh@leanconstruction.org

Community of Practice (CoP) Corner

LCI would like to thank all of the CoPs who participated in the CoP Congress meeting. It was a great experience for CoPs to come together and learn from each other. In the meeting, the CoP delegates spoke about their needs and successes and what we can do to help each other. Members of the LCI Board of Directors came to the meeting to speak about the "path forward" for the CoPs and how LCI is going to take an active role in their journey to bring Lean knowledge to their markets.

The next CoP face-to-face meeting will be in Dallas Fort-Worth at the end of March. Stayed tuned for more detail.
