Words of Wisdom

From "Lean Design: Facilitating User-Driven Decisions within Project Goals, Safety Parameters," in Lean Operations, Lean Design, Lean Construction, compiled by the Akron Children's Tower Team, 2014, p. 77. The design process is perhaps the most disruptive component of the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model. Architects, interior designers, and engineers are process facilitators – rather than process owners – and they use multiple sub-processes and tools during a series of week-long workshops to help users make detailed decisions, literally from ceilings to flooring…In IPD, end-users make the design decisions for the client team based on their needs, which for Akron Children's included patients, patient families, and hospital professionals – clinical and support services.

This session will start with three leading owners in the USA who are catalyzing transformation of the Construction Industry. The panel will present:

  • An example of innovative Lean program-wide project delivery
  • An example of what is possible to deliver modular solutions for an owner across the world
  • Challenges in implementing Lean company-wide in a large company

Last chance to secure your exhibit space and sponsorship opportunities!!

The last day to grab your exhibit space and sponsorship is September 2nd. There is still prime exhibit space left and sponsorship opportunities of many different levels that fit your budget. At our last year's Congress, we had approximately 1,000 professionals who were owners, designers, contractors and trades contractors attend. Congress has enjoyed a 40% growth rate in attendance over the past three years...and 28% of the companies in the $712b construction market have implemented at least one Lean practice. Based on these numbers, we would like for you to think about sponsoring and exhibiting with us. Think of the benefits that would be provided for your company if all of these people would be able to see your name and be aware of your service. We expect about 1,300 – 1,400 attendees this year with a 20% increase of owners and designers!

Please be sure to contact Ilene Goldberg, igoldberg@leanconstruction.org with any questions that you may have about sponsorship or exhibiting opportunities.

McKinsey Global Institute Survey – Understanding Construction Productivity

McKinsey Global Institute in partnership with our Capital Projects & Infrastructure practice is launching a major effort to investigate labor productivity challenges in the construction sector, and we are reaching out to leading companies and select industry experts in order to incorporate the most valuable perspectives and knowledge into our work. Specifically, we'll be identifying companies which have been able to achieve excellence in productivity, and determining organizational, process, and technological innovations that have enabled that excellence. We will be developing recommendations for policy makers, asset owners, contractors and suppliers on how to boost productivity and remain competitive going forward.

This survey is an essential tool in helping us learn more about what the industry feels has been holding productivity back, how different sectors are approaching innovation, and where there have been strides forward. In addition to sharing the report that will be published, we are happy to play back individual survey results that can help to map practices across the industry average. This can help to pin point strengths and opportunity areas.

15 Minute Survey

Community of Practice (CoP) Corner

LCI would like to thank all of the CoP core team members who volunteered their time to be on the Practice Committee. The newly revamped Practice Committee met for the first time on August 24th. The committee agreed that its goal was to work for the betterment of the CoPs by way of standardization and transparency. Their starting goal is to create a document to help with onboarding a new CoP core team member or someone in a leadership position. The committee hopes to have the first draft of this document completed by the LCI Annual Congress. They also agreed to meet in person at the Congress to go over their ideas and comments. This promises to be a very productive year for the Practice Committee, under the leadership of Alex Gregory from the Dallas Fort Worth CoP.
