Words of Wisdom

"More than 75% of owners in our research favored early assembly of their design and construction partners over the traditional design/bid/build approach, which does not bring a builder to the table until the end of project design"

Attend the Lean design and construction event of the year!

Be among the 1,600 attendees who are dedicated to advancing Lean when you join the 20th Annual LCI Congress, October 15–19, 2018, in Orlando, Florida. No matter where you are in your Lean journey, you won't want to miss this industry-wide event that brings together owners, members of the design community, general contractors, trade partners and other Lean professionals. Deepen your knowledge with the latest Lean methods and walk away with new ideas you can implement immediately.

This year's Congress features three fascinating keynote presentations from these Lean thought-leaders:

  • David Marquet, best-selling author of Turn the Ship Around and former Navy captain; David will speak to a workplace where everyone engages and contributes their full intellectual capacity.
  • Jim Kelly, speaker, thought-leader and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback; Jim will share his life story of overcoming debilitating obstacles and what it means to be "Kelly Tough".
  • Al Manshum, senior vice president of support services at Advocate Aurora Health; Al will speak to Advocate's Learn journey, successes and Lessons Learned.

Rates will increase next month, on September 10th — make your plans today to lock down early registration savings.

Save on eLearning
with these discount offers!

To celebrate the release of LCI's first eLearning course, Introduction to Last Planner System®, we are offering a discount code (SAVE10) for eLearners to save 10% on their purchase.

LCI corporate members ordering in bulk should not use the discount code and should instead email to claim a volume discount of up to 65% off the already reduced member price.

Busy design and construction practitioners will benefit from the interactivity of the Introduction to Last Planner System® eLearning course that comes in the form of exercises and knowledge checks that require a minimum 80 percent correct to advance to the next module. With eLearning, learners can work on their own schedule from any smart device rather than taking time off work to travel for classroom learning.

Each year, LCI Congress attracts more design and construction practitioners who are hungry for the industry's latest Lean-enabled technology and valuable networking opportunities.

The photo above is from the annual Exhibitor Sneak Peek Reception that is open to all attendees Tuesday evening, and is a great chance to strike a conversation on Lean improvements.

Sponsorships of all levels are still available, but there are only three exhibit spaces left at the 20th Annual LCI Congress. Act now to claim your exhibit space or sign up for the right sponsorship for your organization before it's too late!

First time attendee advice from
LCI Congress speaker Joe Donarumo

LCI kicked off its LCI Congress blog series with a feature on Joe Donarumo, Director, Lean Application/Senior Superintendent at Linbeck Group. Joe is a speaker and Champion this year and will be the 2019 LCI Congress chair next year.

His advice is to "start small" if the 20th Annual LCI Congress will be your first one to attend. Read on for more advice and to learn more about his highly engaging and interactive breakout presentation "How can LCI fill the Talent Gap with the Next Generation of Lean Leaders?" on Wednesday at 4:40 p.m.

Community of Practice (CoP) Corner -
San Diego CoP 4th Industry Day Event
on 8/3 was a huge success

The LCI San Diego CoP hosted its 4th Industry Day on Aug. 3 to bring together more than 120 guests to learn from five unique presentations on various Lean topics, including:

  • Integrating Lean and BIM in practice through Virtual Design in Construction (VDC) at Skanska Norway
  • Integrated team approach at the San Diego Seaport Redevelopment Project
  • Implantation of offsite manufacturing in a vertically integrated team
  • Scrum – what it is and how it can benefit your team
  • What University of California San Diego is doing to foster greater collaboration and resultant outcomes on projects

Many thanks to the CoP event planning committee for putting together a quality day of learning and networking and to the more than 20 event sponsors for their support!

Use these simulations to see
Lean principles in action

You and your project team can use Lean simulations to drive home the importance of reliable flow and Kanban when advancing your Lean journey. Design and construction processes are large and complex, but simulations are compact, short and can be performed in a quiet, learning environment.

The photo above of the Make-A-Card simulation in action was taken at an Introduction to Lean Project Delivery workshop hosted by LCI DC Metro CoP. LCI has three simulations available for purchase now to guide your team toward a Lean culture:

  • Make-A-Card takes less than an hour and demonstrates the advantages of Kanban and "pull" over traditional push and batch.
  • Parade of Trades simulates the way work parades through a project and shows the impact of unpredictable workflow.
  • Silent Squares explores collaboration and illustrates the issues of traditional project delivery.
