LCI 2017 Congress Sponsorship/Exhibit Opportunities

Bringing value to every aspect of Congress is a top goal for LCI, and we want our attendees to benefit from their time spent at our event. The contributions of the vast array of sponsors and exhibitors are just another way to add value to the educational offerings of Congress. Owners, designers, general contractors and trade partners visit the exhibit hall to learn about the newest tools and technology for support in different phases of their Lean journey.

Last year’s record breaking attendance of 1,325 Lean professionals was the fifth year of consecutive growth, and in 2017 we expect continued growth over our 2016 attendance.

New LCI Research Committee Includes Seven Academic Fellows Focused on Future Research Agenda

LCI has engaged representatives from seven universities in support of our efforts to promote research that benefits the Lean community. In a day-long session June 1, these LCI Academic Fellows worked to capture a long list of potential research topics and approaches. By day’s end, they had identified two specific initiatives they will work to pursue in the months leading up to the LCI annual Congress in Anaheim, Calif. in October. These topics include the owner validation process, a key aspect of effective Lean Project Delivery and one not as fully documented and understood as it should be considering its critical importance. A team was established to conduct interviews with owners, explore the state of current practice, and begin to document and identify better practices. The second topic area concerns the need for development of a more structured approach to Lean Construction strategy implementation on projects. The team feels a more structured approach will help teams ensure they have in place an effective planning process for choosing and leveraging an appropriate set of Lean tools for their projects. The ultimate goal here is a guidebook and sample templates for effective implementation.

Community of Practice (CoP) Corner

RTKL Callisons Architects hosted the National Capital Region (NCR) CoP Lean Coffee on June 9, and it had a unique dynamic. RTKL Callisons designers currently working on a project invited their builder, Turner Construction, to create a real-time back and forth discussion.

Turner explained how their daily huddles are not about solving a problem, but are about making sure tasks have been completed & identifying what’s coming next. The leadership role rotates to encourage others to engage in leading discussions.

The designers’ main takeaway in the Just-in-Time Design conversation was that communication is key to figuring out what designers really need and to have everyone on the same page.

For your next Lean Coffee, invite others on your project team and make it a discussion about how you can deliver more value to your current client!

A Year in Review: Before the Regret

At the end of May, Lean Construction Blog released a post describing the use and practice of Lean methods and research when coming to terms with your New Year’s Resolutions by Bevan Mace, Balfour Beatty Construction. Mace describes this time as the point of no turning back and is the start to actually completing those goals, whether they be personal or in the design and construction industry. In this blog, he explains his experience with and observation of the Integrated Project Delivery System and how he came to terms with its effectiveness and improvement of his project goals.

LCI recruits a summer intern, Alicia Huerta, for LCI Congress support

As LCI prepares for the 2017 LCI Congress, Oct. 16-20 in Anaheim, Calif., it is no doubt that we would bring on a new face to help with the day-to-day adventures at LCI headquarters in Arlington, Va. We are happy to welcome our new marketing communications intern, Alicia Huerta, to our team as we embark on our 19th annual LCI Congress journey.

“LCI has given me a new way to challenge my workday. I have taken the LCI journey to Congress as a personal journey and cannot wait to see the outcome of our work!,” Alicia says.

When she started her college career, she never saw herself near the construction industry; but now she is taking a course on project management with hopes to get her certification and since joining the LCI team, she can’t stop thinking about how her skills can be used to help LCI and the industry grow!
