Lean in design expert Q&A – Lean journey and team onboarding

Seven years ago, Andrea Sponsel began her Lean journey by being thrown onto an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) project without any experience implementing Lean. Today, Andrea works as a vice president and senior interior designer at HKS, and she shares how she overcame her biggest obstacle along her Lean journey along with best practices for team onboarding in this week’s blog post.

"It's really about developing a process for getting people up to speed as new team members are added throughout the whole design and construction process," Andrea Sponsel said in her interview.

Community of Practice (CoP) Corner -
What is a Lean Coffee?

Whether you’ve never heard of Lean design and construction or you're a seasoned Lean champion within your organization, you can find value at a Lean Coffee. Designers, constructors, trades and even owners bring lessons learned from their unique project experiences in an effort to improve the industry’s processes as a whole.

Lean Coffee in Action

Here's how it works:

  • Everyone writes a Lean topic of interest on a sticky note
  • Everyone votes to establish priority of discussion topics
  • Everyone shares best practices focused on the topic for 8 minutes
  • After 8 minutes, everyone votes to either continue discussing the topic for 4 more minutes OR to move on because it was adequately discussed
  • Before moving on to the next topic, takeaways are considered

Take part in the low-pressure learning environment of Lean Coffees! Each month, LCI Communities of Practice (CoP) offer Lean Coffee events around the U.S.
