Words of Wisdom

From: Target Value Delivery, Practitioner Guidebook to Implementation, page 139.
Traditional construction proposals and contracts typically overflow with inclusions, exclusions, and attempts to shift risk on to another party. Contracts in a TVD [Target Value Delivery] project are different, and focus the group on managing risk collectively and putting those most capable of mitigating a risk in a position to actually do so.

Owner Success Story – T. Rowe Price

T. Rowe Price’s Brian Dean found “a better way to deliver projects” after participating in the University of Minnesota case studies that aimed to uncover how and why Lean and IPD lead to success.

Thanks to the early on-boarding of stakeholders and streamlined communication, the project delivered was under budget, which allowed T. Rowe Price to feed the saved dollars directly back into the project to further increase value.

Lean Learning Video – Lean Construction Defined featuring Bevan Mace

Bevan Mace, Balfour Beatty Construction, defines Lean Construction and then launches into the six key Lean concepts: respect for people, generation of value, focus on a process and flow, removal of waste, continuous improvement and optimize the whole.

Lean Construction Defined

Lean thinking challenges traditional silos of communication, which tend to only maximize each stakeholder’s part, by optimizing the entire value stream as a whole.

The Lean Learning Video series of 12 is based on key chapters in LCI’s first book, Transforming Design and Construction: A Framework for Change. You can watch this video and the rest of the series on the LCI website under Learning, Getting Started with Lean.

LCI is hiring!

Join the LCI staff in our endeavor to transform the built environment through Lean implementation! We’re looking to add a Director of Education Programs and a Manager, LCI Communities of Practice Relations to the team, so tell your friends!

Lean Leader Videos – Lean Journeys

Two out of 12 Lean Leader videos submitted by LCI corporate member companies are about their Lean journeys.

Pankow Builder’s How to Increase Construction Labor Productivity through Lean Culture video emphasizes empowering people to collaborate in order to implement their own process improvements.

Warfel Construction’s Lean Video invites us into one of the company’s first Big Room meetings for its first Lean project so that we can see the round table method that engages all stakeholders.

Watch the Lean Journey videos and the rest of the Lean Leader videos on our website under Learning, Getting Started with Lean, Lean Leader Video Submissions (blue sidebar on the right).

Silent Squares Simulation

Convincing your project team that collaboration leads to better outcomes is not always easy, but LCI’s Silent Squares Simulation explores the real and imagined boundaries of thinking collectively to give your team a sense of comfort and confidence in relying on each other.

The Silent Squares Simulation is an interactive learning experience that engages each team member’s collaborative and problem-solving skills while simultaneously showing how more work can be done when all team members are sharing the same goals.
