Lean Manufacturing = Lean Engineering (Greater Des Moines CoP)
August 11, 2020 @ 8:00 am – 9:00 am
Read more >>During our discussion on Lean Manufacturing we will cover several Lean Principles and how they can be applied to Engineering and Construction. We will focus specifically on how optimizing flow efficiency before resource efficiency is key. Then we will look at standards and how they can best support the ideal flow and translate into increased resource efficiency as well. The check points for QA/QC and how they can apply in engineering are very similar to manufacturing. The concept of inventory, which is fundamental in identifying wastes, can be difficult to find in engineering and construction, so looking for batching and moving to more just in time deliverables is very important. Metrics are vital in driving all this information, specifically productivity metrics beyond utilization. All these items tie back to Lean and the idea of finding wastes in the system and determining how to eliminate them systematically.

Turner/MSFT presentation on High Risk Activity integration in LPS
Safety planning is often an isolated process from other construction processes such as trade coordination, change order management, quality control/quality assurance, and project meetings. Engaging front line craft workers, supervisors, management and safety professionals with a common language and understanding of High Risk Activities (HRAs) will provide a more comprehensive process to plan and mitigate the potential for serious injuries or incidents. This presentation will explain how HRAs are fully integrated with the Last Planner System and other processes to eliminate the treatment of safety as a silo and independent from project coordination. The presenters will explain how HRAs are incorporated in contract schedules, pull plans, Weekly Work Plans, Make Ready Meetings, Daily Huddles and morning stretch and flex. The panel members, will give their perspective of the process as trade partners, Microsoft, general contractor, and safety professionals. We must plan for smooth reliable flow. We must make a plan for quality! And, most importantly, we must plan to be injury free!

Better Building Workshop
The business of creating our built environment remains largely silos and disconnected today. Owners, designers, construction managers, and trade contractors each defend their profit margins by shifting risk to others and focusing on their own piece of the puzzle. Lean thinking promises to change all this, yet has proven particularly difficult to implement in the building industry.
Better Building provides a practical model for putting Lean thinking into action and improving the experience of project work. Based on years of experience shifting mindsets and behaviors, this model answers the most often asked questions and provides a roadmap for navigating the toughest parts of a Lean transformation journey in the project-driven environment.
Whether exploring Lean for the first time or sharpening skills of leadership and continuous improvement, every individual, team or organization will benefit from these insights.
Join Klaus Lemke as he shares some of the experiences and insights that went into the development of the Better Building model. The session will include practical advice for incorporating Lean thinking into project-driven work, and a chance to exchange ideas and challenge your own thinking about what is possible.

Getting Over the Hump of Good Intentions: From Forming and Storming to Performing
Tuesday, January 30, 2018
1:00 PM to 2:30 PM EST
Projects begin with good intentions. The first meeting opens with optimistic skepticism. The owner sets a hopeful tone. She declares, “This project will focus on teamwork and respect.” However, something happens shortly after the formation that triggers old memories and flips the focus to self-preservation. When the storming stage hits, and it will, most project teams are totally unprepared and revert back to habit.
This webinar is designed to turn good intentions into skills needed to translate those into performance. You will learn the discipline and metrics for building and restoring trust. You will learn soft skills for engaging the team, leveraging individual strengths, identifying gaps and handling friction and conflict. You will also learn how to address the toxic effects of disengaged team members.

IPD for Small Projects – Is It Possible?: An Owner’s Perspective
Thursday, December 14, 2017
11:00 AM to 12:30 PM EDT
Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) has been used successfully on large projects with great success over the last 10 years. Many people wonder if the benefits can apply to smaller projects and often ask, what size is too small for IPD? This presentation explores case studies of three smaller projects (ranging in value from $1.8M to $6M). A single design and construction team completed three different IPD projects over a period of five years in an occupied hospital in San Mateo, Calif. within OSHPD jurisdiction with great success. The team replaced a chilled water system, the emergency electrical system, and a 7,000 sf interior remodel consecutively using Integrated Contracts with shared risk/reward and execution of Lean principles such as Last Planner® System, Building Information Modeling (BIM), takt time, visual management, and a modified Big Room environment.
This presentation will dive into details of the projects, the team structure, lessons learned, and outcomes for these three projects through the eyes of James Pease, the owner’s representative for the projects.

Introduction to Choosing By Advantages (CBA)
Thursday, November 30th
2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. EDT
If you have ever struggled getting a project team to collaboratively make decisions that are focused on the project value proposition, then this Choosing By Advantages webinar may help! Choosing By Advantages (CBA) allows for visual and transparent decision making. It also aligns with the desired values and cultures of Lean/IPD and allows teams to emphasize a project’s value to stakeholders (customers and clients). CBA is a decision-making system that acknowledges all decisions are essentially subjective – but then guides the participants towards basing the subjectivity on objectively discovered and documented facts.
With CBA, decision makers can reach consensus, focus on outcomes, and understand all of the factors considered during the decision-making process. The process also creates transparency to the decision-making process simplifying the process if decisions need to be reviewed or revisited later in the project. This session will provide the participant a brief introduction to the CBA decision-making system and hopefully get you interested in future training.

Join us for a Lean Coffee to learn and support each other in our Lean endeavors! Take part in an open conversation in a safe, small and low-pressure environment about the topics that are relevant to our Lean community. We want to hear about the problems you are solving, the issues you want to solve, and lessons you’ve learned on your Lean Journey. No previous Lean experience is required.
Participants from cross functional roles as designers, constructors, owners, trades partners, and associations propose discussion topics around any subject about which they want to learn – THERE ARE NO IRRELEVANT DISCUSSION TOPICS! Each proposer takes 15 to 30 seconds to pitch their topic, written on a sticky note, to the group. Once all topics have been pitched, voting begins to establish a priority for discussing the topics. Topics are then ordered from highest to lowest votes and examined accordingly. Participants will receive 8 minutes of time to discuss the topic. After 8 minutes there will be a ‘thumbs up/ thumbs down’ to decide whether or not the discussion should continue. Thumbs up equals 4 more minutes on the clock. This happens until it is agreed that the topic has been discussed to satisfaction. Takeaways are considered and then the topic with the next largest amount of votes is addressed. Come as you are and be ready to learn.

Time Management and the Use of Lean Principles
Tuesday, November 14, 2017
11:00 AM to 12:30 PM EDT
This course explores time management and participants quickly learn that it has very little to do with time. We start with examining the big picture and long-term goals, then drill down, giving students powerful methods to handle all of the things that enter their world. We look at how to eliminate waste and how to handle time wasters such as emails, phone calls, drop-in visitors, and meetings. We also talk about the biggest time waster on the planet and how to avoid it.

The Lean Construction Institute conducted a study and found that TYPICAL projects were 61% behind schedule and 49% were over budget. How can we fix this? We can start by looking at prefabrication as the norm in how buildings are built vs the exception and apply manufacturing technology and advancements to improve the outcomes in construction. We will explore how prefabrication delivers certainty in the schedule and budget as well as reducing site impacts and waste.

The 5 Things You Can’t Spread Improvement Without
Monday, October 2, 2017
1:00 pm to 1:30 pm EDT
Most people think of Lean as a set of tools, but it’s even more powerful when it’s woven into an organization’s culture. Getting everyone improving every day has an enormous impact. This webinar will discuss the importance of developing such a culture. It will review the interplay between leadership behaviors, processes, and technology that are critical to success, and discuss the five specific areas that companies must develop to create and sustain an improvement culture.
The presenters are Greg Jacobson and Jeff Roussel – KaiNexus
Greg Jacobson is the CEO and Co-Founder of KaiNexus, an improvement software platform that helps companies spread an improvement culture. Greg graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in 2001 and completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2004. It was at this time that he began practicing Lean principles and realized that technology would accelerate developing a culture of continuous improvement, a realization which eventually led to the founding of KaiNexus.
Jeff Roussel is the KaiNexus VP of Sales. Prior to that, he was one of the first enterprise directors at Spredfast, helping organizations create great social media experiences for their customers. Previously, he was a sales engineer and account executive at Invodo and Postini, the latter of which was acquired by Google in 2007. He’s on the board of advisors for the social media agency Social Distillery, and has an MBA from St. Edwards University.

The Most Powerful Interactions of Lean Construction and Advancing Technology
Tuesday, September 19, 2017
3:00 pm to 3:30 pm EDT
Construction companies are being forced to adapt…in four major ways. Project delivery methods are under the microscope. Lean Construction Principles and Methods are helping professionals to see with a new “lens” that there is preventable rework and other sources of waste.. Hiring, training, and retaining the best and brightest professionals and workers is urgent. Research from academic institutions and published studies prove that new technology can improve project outcomes. Integrate. Strategize. Lead.
Kenneth H. Stowe, P. E. is a construction technology expert, development strategist, and project systems coach at Autodesk, Inc. How to Use The Pocket Sensei with Hal Macomber
Wednesday, September 27, 2017
3:00 pm to 3:30 pm EDT
Join Touchplan to learn about Hal Macomber’s new book for developing Lean leaders. We will discuss the format and explore the best way to use this unique resource. While Lean is all the buzz, Lean leadership is wanting. Success with Lean requires change and growing leaders of all types can be a long process of replacing current automatic ways of engaging. Congress attendees will receive a special LCI edition and can learn more in a Lean Lab.
Presenters are Hal Macomber, Elizabeth Long and Calayde Davey.
Hal Macomber did his first production system project in the summer of 1974 in the butcher department of a supermarket. He followed that with a two-year stint in the operations research department of the Bank of Boston in 1976 – 1978. Hal was selected to study quality and just-in-time production in Japan in the mid-1980s. That began the formal introduction to Lean which spanned numerous industries and professions. Along the way, Hal was introduced to the work of Fernando Flores — first the study of the language-action perspective, then ontological redesign. Those bodies of knowledge coupled to Lean allowed him and his collaborators to make very large scale organizational interventions.
Elizabeth Long has been part of the Lean community for 4 years working with teams to implement the Last Planner System using Touchplan. She currently is helping more people learn about Touchplan in their marketing department.
Calayde Davey studied for her Masters in Architecture in South Africa, and with the help of a Fulbright Scholarship, obtained a PhD in Environmental Planning, Economics and Urban Development at Kansas State University. During the few years in the U.S., she worked on a Lean Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) project in the roles of Lean production engineering and building information modeling.

Traditionally we have relied on anecdotal evidence to suggest how Lean project teams typically deliver better project outcomes. Empirical evidence now shows that projects with high Lean intensity are three times more likely to complete ahead of schedule and two times more likely to complete under budget. How and why Lean and IPD projects are excelling were explored through two separate Lean Construction Institute research efforts conducted by Dodge Data & Analytics and University of Minnesota.
- We benchmarked 162 projects and inquired about 27 management methods.
- Research results now demonstrate statistically significant correlations between high Lean intensity and project success.
- This effort definitively breaks down some common myths about Lean project work, and makes a compelling case that Lean makes a positive difference in project performance.
Join us to find out why owners, architects, engineers, and constructors are forging ahead with Lean. Attendees will learn how to use this compelling information as a call to action, and a way to change the project mindset for the better. They will leave the event with an understanding of how to get started, and the best way to tell the story.

Effective Management of the Last Planner® System Using vPlanner
Monday, September 18, 2017
1:00 pm to 1:30 pm EDT
Effective management of the processes and information flows required to maintain dynamic networks of commitments is vital to the successful implementation of the Last Planner® system. The more integrated the tools used, the less time it takes for a team to react to variation, resulting in more sound weekly work plan assignments.
This Webinar will present upcoming features in vPlanner V4.0, an innovative visual planning software solution designed to support short-term interval planning as well as production system design and management. Built by seasoned planners, vPlanner interfaces with CPM tools and supports all phases of the Last Planner® system through an integrated and easy-to-use visual interface.
With vPlanner, teams can better utilize their limited resources to maximize the value from the time invested in planning, scale up their efforts, and reduce the overhead required to maintain the same information using incompatible tools. vPlanner is a value solutions partner of LCI. It was developed by Ghafari Associates, one of LCI’s corporate members and a pioneer in the application of lean and VDC to improve collaboration across the project supply chain.
Samir Emdanat is the Director of vPlanner Product Development. He is an industry-recognized leader in managing Integrated Project Delivery.

A Lean Coffee
Date: Friday, July 28, 2017
Time: 7:30 am to 9:00 am
Location: Carolina Medical Center – Conference Room #01
1400 East Morehead Street
Charlotte, NC 28203
Attendance is free of charge.
Coffee will be provided

Build Practical Skills and Connections to Improve Integrated Lean Project Delivery
Attend the first-ever Lean Construction Institute (LCI) Last Planner Workshop to improve your skills for implementing Integrated Lean Project Delivery (ILPD). Benefit from practical implementation advice and engage with colleagues in the field facing many of the same ILPD challenges. This is a highly collaborative forum for superintendents, foremen and tactical field managers to share in a small-scale learning environment (~40 attendees) conducive to in-depth learning and sharing. Build connections among experienced peers for continued knowledge sharing across regions during and after the event. Given the small audience size, only one registration per company will be accepted. We anticipate replicating this event in the future at other locations around the country.
Workshop topics:
- LPS 201 Field Lessons
- Production Management: Batch size-work flow
- Manging Trades as Partners
- Productivity Tracking: Cost projection/team self-auditing
- Techniques for field collaboration of designers & contractors
Learning Objectives:
- Share lessons learned and collaborate in ILPD project challenges
- Provide practical training to promote successful Lean Implementation
- Create cross-regional social networks among active Lean practitioners

Managing to Learn: The Use of the A3
Management Process Workshop
Taught by the Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI)
Date: May 3 & 4, 2017
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm
Location: Lean Construction Institute
1400 N. 14th Street (Top of the Town)
12th Floor
Arlington, VA 22209
Where is YOUR organization?
When you hear A3, what comes to mind? A paper size, tool, or a process? Our observation is most people use A3s on special projects as a “report out” tool of the results. Although this provides the benefit of a quick summary it doesn’t begin to take advantage of the benefit of the A3 or of the A3 thinking process. Using an A3 as a report out tool is like using a smartphone exclusively for phone calls. Yes, you are getting some value, but only a fraction of what is possible.
As Jim Womack says, “The most basic definition of an A3 would be a P-D-C-A storyboard or report, reflecting Toyota’s way of capturing the PDCA process on one sheet of paper. But the broader notion of the A3 as a process–embodying the way of thinking represented in the format–captures the heart of lean management. In this context, an A3 document structures effective and efficient dialogue that fosters understanding followed by the opportunity for deep agreement.” How often do you experience “deep agreement” in your team or organization? He goes on, “It’s a tool that engenders communication and dialogue in a manner that leads to good decisions, where the proposed countermeasures have a better chance of being effective because they are based on facts and data gathered at the place where the work is performed, from the people who perform it.”
Description:
The purpose of this workshop is to explore the lessons and insights of Managing to Learn from four perspectives.
Note: each participant will receive a copy of Managing to Learn.
1. First, you’ll learn sound A3 thinking and management by following the stages of learning shared in Managing To Learn (MTL). MTL describes how a young manager learns to handle a significant problem-solving responsibility by creating an A3 that earns him the authority to address the problem in the ways he proposes. You’ll examine how the A3 changes with each revision, what the young manager has learned about the A3 thinking, the A3 process that he applies in each revision, and what the course of his development indicates about the deep problem-solving focus that characterizes lean thinking.
2. Next, you’ll get the chance to develop your own eyes and ears to recognize effective A3 stories. You’ll describe the problem-solving thinking that is required for each section of the A3 for the PDCA story it tells to be effective.
3. Then, you’ll create your own A3s. You’ll address real problems you’re already working on every day for this exercise. You’ll work in small groups to read, discuss, and evaluate each other’s A3s. And then you’ll have the chance to coach each other, offering guidance on how to improve each other’s A3 stories.
4. Finally, you’ll learn various forms and uses of the A3 process. You’ll have examples from the book Managing to Learn to use as a guide. And you’ll explore the following:
- Basic types of A3 stories and how the format differs for each.
- Role that A3 plays in the process for gaining alignment with the stakeholders in a problem situation and seeking their agreement to proceed with the countermeasures or improvements being proposed.
Ways that A3 functions as a change management tool, a general management tool, a human development tool and a knowledge sharing tool.
Instructor:
Eric Ethington has passion for Lean, and over 30 years of work experience feeding that passion. Starting as an Industrial Engineer with General Motors’ AC Spark Plug Division, Eric learned early that continuous improvement required a balance of technical knowledge and interpersonal skills. In 1998 Eric began a Lean implementation leadership position with Delphi’s Energy division in Flint, Michigan.
During this same time, Eric coached cross-functional teams and met one of his most influential mentors, Yoshinobu Yamada. From 1998 to 2002 Eric spent over 50% of his time learning from Mr. Yamada in a variety of plants and situations throughout Delphi. This experience helped him to understand that lean transformations are very case-by-case; success is not achieved and sustained from a check-list.
In 2001 Eric moved to Delphi’s World Headquarters as the manager of the corporate Lean support team. He piloted the Lean Enterprise College where he was introduced to the A3 process as it was a featured segment in the training with the support of John Shook.
After Delphi, Eric worked at Textron before founding Lean Shift Consulting in 2009, focusing on developing others to be lean leaders and transform their own organizations. Since 2009 he has also supported the LEI Lean Enterprise Partners Program. Eric holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Kettering University (formerly GMI), an MBA in Operations from the University of Michigan, Flint campus, and is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt in Design.
