LCI Central Indiana Community of Practice

The Central Indiana CoP began meeting in 2014. Our group is focused on bringing Lean education to Central Indiana and beyond. Our group holds large group meetings 4 times a year, and began hosting monthly Lean Coffees in June 2016. We are always seeking new members, meeting locations, and speakers for our events. WEBINAR: Lean in the Design Phase

Design professionals want to know how they can improve client outcomes while maximizing design excellence. Participants in the Lean in the Design Phase webinar will gain insight to Lean approaches and tools relative to the design phase of project delivery.  They will understand how Lean supports optimizing team communication, collaboration and results by connecting people, principles, and practices. Participants will be exposed to how Lean processes such as Target Value Delivery, set-based design, and the Last Planner System® in Design can be applied.

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain overview understanding of Lean as relative to the design phase.
  • Learn how Lean tools and processes eliminate waste and support higher productivity.
  • Learn how the Lean Operating System enables design solutions that respond to the Owner’s values.
  • Learn how teams organize, operate in a collaborative setting and communicate resulting in more effective project delivery.

WEBINAR: Introduction to the Last Planner System® in Design

In this webinar, Christian Pikel will present key topics and lessons for applying Last Planner System® (LPS®) based production planning to the design phase of a project. Participants will learn why it is important to break down traditional large design document set deliverables into a map of information hand-offs and to view question resolution as milestones.
As a shortened primer version of the full Last Planner® in Design workshop, this webinar will introduce participants to the concepts of collaborative design planning and how LPS® principles are adapted for the design phase vs the construction phase and supported by concepts and tools such as scrum and Kanban.
Attendees should have a working understanding of Last Planner System® as applied in construction.

Attendees will learn:
• How the principles of Last Planner System® can be applied to the Design/Development phases of a project.
• How elements of Agile Management and Scrum Framework that combine productively with LPS® in Design Management.
• How successful application of these frameworks and principles can reduce design rework and improve collaboration.
• How metrics can be utilized for team feedback.
• The importance of collaborative plan development and on-going planning conversations in a ‘time-box’ structure.

WEBINAR: Introduction to the Last Planner System®

In this webinar we will cover introductory level information to give attendees an understanding of the Last Planner System® for Construction, how each element of LPS® is implemented by a project team, and how all elements work together to provide a complete framework for a team based collaborative production management and continuous improvement system.  The webinar is intended for individuals who have some basic understanding of Lean construction principles and who would like to learn more specifically about the Last Planner System® and the pull planning process.

 

The Last Planner System®, one of the hallmark collaborative planning tools supporting Lean design/construction projects, has been shown to streamline the collaborative scheduling process, increase plan reliability and productivity throughout multiple disciplines and provide a common platform for continuous improvement of the planning process. Understanding of the Last Planner System® is invaluable to firms and individuals progressing on their Lean journey.

Collective skills and commitment play a huge role in the success of the design community.  From ensuring on-time delivery to guaranteeing high quality project value, collaboration is vital to a team’s success.  High performing design and construction teams that empower the intersection of equity, diversity and inclusion with Lean methodologies excel at efficiency while increasing client satisfaction and eliminating re-work.

The 2020 Lean in Design Forum will cover solutions and efficiencies made possible by strong equity, diversity and inclusion across the design community.  Session and discussion topics will include:

  • How Lean thinking intersects with ED&I best practices.
  • The importance of collaboration and the strength of high performing teams.
  • How to use Lean practices to promote equity, inclusion and the advancement of women,
  • The connection of design thinking and diversity

The annual Lean in Design Forum, in partnership with P2SL and AIA, is a unique event where designers come together to learn about and advance Lean methodologies.  Industry leading practitioners will present on how Lean techniques free up time for creative decision making and innovative problem solving on current topics affecting the design community.

WEBINAR: Principles of Target Value Delivery (TVD)

Staying within the allowable budget and ensuring the team’s innovation decreases waste and increases value to the customer are attributes of successful project delivery and can be achieved through Target Value Delivery (TVD). TVD is a disciplined management practice with several phases (Business Case Planning, Validation, Value Delivery and Value Post Construction) meant to be applied holistically to obtain maximum value. The phases of TVD can be supplemented by core components like team organization, Big Room, project planning, cost modeling, continuous estimating and conceptual design. Looking to improve your project outcomes? Studies have shown that up to 70-80% of activities performed in design and construction are waste or considered non-value added. We need to learn to see waste in order to reduce waste. This webinar will help participants see waste and will provide creative ways to start to reduce waste and add more value to our projects.
