LCI Chicago CoP is serving the need to support local students in design and construction

LCI Chicago CoP is serving the need to support local students in design and construction

The LCI Chicago Community of Practice (CoP) recognized the late Bob Krier, a pioneer in the Chicago-land market in spreading the value of Lean construction, in November 2017 with the 1st Annual Bob Krier Award Night. Currently, the CoP core group is in the planning process for the 2nd Annual Bob Krier Award Night scheduled for November 15, 2018.

The Chicago CoP felt that there was no better way to honor his legacy than to develop an annual award highlighting an individual and/or team that embodies the award’s values. While the mission of the LCI Chicago CoP is to provide a forum where local Lean thought-leaders, practitioners and enthusiasts can openly share experiences and learn from one another, they also recognize the responsibility to support students and those in the early stage of their careers in the design and construction industry.

With that in mind, and realizing the shortage of skilled labor in our industry, the LCI Chicago CoP has also created an annual scholarship fund to help students in the Chicago area who are pursuing careers. Many other LCI CoPs recognize the need to reach out to students to fill the void in our skilled labor force as well.

At its inaugural event last year, LCI Executive Director Dan Heinemeier presented the award to Bob’s widow, Andrea Krier, and their children. In years following, companies will go through a nomination process for a Lean project or team. Finalists will be selected and three will present at the annual event with the award being given to the winner that evening.

The Bob Krier Award Night provides companies the ability to sponsor a Lean Lab space where they can display and highlight a Lean project. Proceeds from the nomination process and Lean Lab spaces go directly to the annual scholarship fund.
