Research conducted by the LCI shows that projects delivered using Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) are significantly more likely to perform better than average. So why is IPD not more widely used in the Upper Midwest? This forum will address this question through four industry experts sharing their experience with IPD. There will also be opportunity for small group discussion to identify barriers that prevent IPD from happening and opportunities to overcome these barriers.

Renée Cheng, FAIA, DPACSA, is a nationally renowned Professor in the School of Architecture at the University of innesota. Cheng has pioneered research surrounding the intersection of design and emerging technologies including work on industry adoption of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Lean. She served as the inaugural Chair of the Lean Construction Institute Research Committee and current serves on the LCI Board of Directors.
Eric Ubersax – Devenney Group, Architect – Eric has been involved with IPD projects and Lean delivery of healthcare projects for the past 10 years. He worked on some of the first IFOA projects for Sutter Health in California, and was the ILPD design lead on the first integrated project in Canada. Eric has experienced IPD at its best, but has learned from the pitfalls in the process. He is the lean Champion for Devenney Group, a 100% healthcare focused architectural design firm.
Mark Kalar – Cunningham Group, Attorney – is Chief Corporate Counsel at Cuningham Group Architecture. After earning an M.Arch. degree from the University of Minnesota, he practiced architecture for 17 years before earning a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law. He has researched and published articles related to alternative and emerging delivery types such as IPD and P3.
Lane Schoening and Bill Scherling – Stahl Construction – have a combined 45+ years in pre-construction and constructions services for a variety of clients across multiple market sectors. Lane and Bill share a military background, leading complex and challenging construction and engineering projects worldwide. Currently, Lane works as the Director of Field Operations, where Bill works as the Director of Project Management. As a team, they bring a unique perspective from both the office and field sides of a construction project. They’re currently working on one of the first IPD projects in the Midwest – highly-sustainable, transit-oriented, mixed-use development with PLACE, a non-profit developer.
