Join us for a Lean Coffee to explore the topic of Lean in Design and Preconstruction. This is a joint presentation with Balfour Beatty and HGA explaining how we are using lean tools and processes to improve the way we work together on design and preconstruction. We discuss how we are using lean ideas to develop stronger, more cohesive teams, to arrive at the best solutions, and to drive schedule reliability. Our case study is a joint project that had a very tight schedule with fast-track design packages and a complex GSA review process. Business as usual – late design submissions, last-minute changes, and budget overruns – would clearly not result in success! Specific topics include: How to implement a unified workflow and other lean processes without the benefit of a Big Room or an IPD contract, by using cloud-based tools (C4R, Trello) and an online meeting process. How to reduce redesign and over-budget design by improving collaboration during preconstruction. How to increase lean knowledge and skill during the design process using pull planning and collaborative tools to transfer knowledge. How the design process looks to the experienced lead designer versus the new team member. How to increase communication between team members who traditionally don’t collaborate (i.e. design and trades).
