LCI Los Angeles CoP>> Lean Principles in BIM Coordination (Monterey Park, CA) Speakers: Jim Youngblood, Consultant LACCD and
David Francis, Southland Industries One of the main impacts of BIM is the use of
virtual coordination in the design and construction phases of a
project. This process has created a new “field” of expertise on
What, When, Who, How and Why to effectively implement a coordination
process. This process is used at all stages of a project to identify
potential design, constructability and maintenance issues. The
presentation is aimed at identifying “issues” and “waste” in the
process and outline how to effectively implement virtual
coordination utilizing lean principles. Registration details are at:

LCI Nor Cal CoP>> Built in Quality—Getting Things Done Right…The First Time (Oakland, then Sacramento, CA) Speaker: Will Lichtig,
The Boldt Company, joined by other members from the
Sutter Sacramento Project Team. Traditional QA/QC and inspection programs help
identify work that is “defective,” but do little to assure that work
is done properly the first time or that workers learn from
breakdowns in order to avoid future defects. Building on the
Built in Quality ideals described in the Integrated Form of
Agreement for Lean Project Delivery, The Boldt Company’s Sutter
Sacramento Team is leading an effort with its Trade Partners, to
design and document how field operations will be performed in an
effort to produce work that is 100% compliant with the conditions of
satisfaction. Come hear how this process works and experience
firsthand how to go about developing Built in Quality Field Books. Bay Area Branch, Feb 8 START TIME 5:00pm. Register at:

LCI Colorado CoP>> How to Join the Project Integration Revolution (Denver, CO) Speaker: Brant Lahnert, PE The construction industry is the only US industry
that has had a reduction in productivity over the last 40 years. The
disintegration of the design and construction industries over that
time has resulted in adversarial methods for building delivery that
have increased costs, killed innovation, made optimization
impossible, increased risk, and reduced reliability for the owner. Only by integrating the design and construction
process in a collaborative litigation-free team environment can
project-centric optimization be realized. Integration seeks to
create a framework in which all key team members are involved from
the start to jointly determine project goals, and risk and reward
are shared appropriately Sounds like a fantasy? Well, it is. However, KL&A has been working on projects for 15
years that have ranged from “nearly integrated” to “not integrated
at all” in our capacity as structural engineers, steel detailers and
construction managers of over $50 million of at-risk steel
construction. We know integration is possible, but it requires a
departure from many long-standing paradigms. Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) concepts can
encompass Building Information Modeling (BIM) and design-build, but
it is bigger than those ideas. It is a better system for delivering
projects, especially those requiring high levels of sustainability,
coordination, schedule performance and cost reliability. The USGBC
has endorsed IPD as the critical delivery method that can deliver
the highest performing sustainable projects. Registration details are at:

Health Science and Education Building on the Phoenix Biomedical
Campus showing the Lean, BIM and Last Planner tools that DPR
Sundt has implemented. Parking is across the street from the project at

LCI New England CoP>> Last Planner System – Implementing on Your Project (Waltham, MA) Presented by Hal Macomber of Lean Project Consulting and Colin Milberg of The Realignment Group Project delivery at all phases is plagued by high
variability which undermines effective planning and overall project
performance. The Last Planner® (sometimes referred to as the Last
Planner System®) is a production planning system designed to produce
predictable work flow and rapid learning in programming, design,
construction and commissioning of projects. Last Planner® is a
structured collaborative process that dramatically improves
coordination, collaboration, and innovation on projects thus
improving value on the project in the form of schedule and cost
performance, productivity, quality, morale and safety. Last Planner®
was developed by Glenn Ballard and Greg Howell in the early 1990’s.
In the past five years, use of Last Planner® on projects and within
both design and construction firms has increased geometrically. This Community of Practice meeting will build on
the January meeting and cover getting started with implementing Last
Planner® on projects, common challenges in implementing Last
Planner®, and hands on exercises on establishing “conditions of
satisfaction” with your “customer” and reliable promising which form
the backbone to the Last Planner System®. Registration details are at:
